Bobby Kimmel grew up in Tucson, but left in the early 60s for Los Angeles where he formed The Stone Poneys with Linda Ronstadt, another Tucsonan. That band recorded 3 albums for Capitol records in the 60s, toured nationally, and had a major hit in 1967 with Different Drum.
In the mid-70s Bobby toured playing upright bass with folk music legends Doc & Merle Watson. He didn't come back to Tucson, his home town until the fall of 2001.
While Bobby was in California, Stefan George and Lavinia White were establishing themselves within Tucson's thriving acoustic music community. By himself and with his long-time partner, Stefan has made over 20 recordings over the course of his career.
Best known in Tucson for playing slide blues guitar, (He is a member of the Arizona Blues Hall of Fame), in BK Special the listener gets to hear his incredible range as an acoustic guitar player. Bobby calls him simply "the band." Stefan has appeared on dozens of recordings by local artists, and now travels each year to perform solo in Hawaii and Germany.
Bobby, Stefan and Lavinia met at the Tucson Folk Festival in 2002, and began playing together regularly in 2003 as part of 4 Corners with singer/songwriter Jo Wilkinson. Jo left 4 Corners in the summer of 2006, and the 3 continued on as BK Special. "With the release of their debut CD, the trio clearly establishes its own musical identity and demonstrates a maturity born of playing together for over 4 1/2 years."
BK Special features intelligent song writing from Bobby and Stefan, tight and unique 3-part harmonies, and brilliant guitar playing from Stefan. The band's debut (self-titled) CD was released in August, 2007, including a guest appearance by Linda Ronstadt.
"BK Special offers the best in acoustic guitar and harmony vocals around." Katherine Burdick , Tucson Kitchen Musicians Association
"I love how each song they sing is wrapped in harmony yet totally different from the song before." Becky Birk, Green Fire Music
"If you guys had been around in the 60s, you would have been HUGE!"
